Three-time defending champion Bjรถrn Borg defeated Roscoe Tanner in the final, 6โ€“7(4โ€“7), 6โ€“1, 3โ€“6, 6โ€“3, 6โ€“4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1979 Wimbledon Championships. It was his fourth Wimbledon title and eighth major title overall.
