\nThe first Volunteer Jam concert was held at War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville.\nThe show was scheduled as a live recording session for two songs for the Fire on the Mountain album, \"No Place to Go\" and \"[Orange Blossom Special](https://bliptext.com/articles/orange-blossom-special-song).\"\nThe CDB invited some of their friends—[Dickey Betts](https://bliptext.com/articles/dickey-betts) from the Allman Brothers Band and [Toy Caldwell](https://bliptext.com/articles/toy-caldwell), [Jerry Eubanks](https://bliptext.com/articles/jerry-eubanks) and [Paul Riddle](https://bliptext.com/articles/paul-riddle) from the Marshall Tucker Band—to get together and jam after their set.\nA tradition was born.\n\n## Volunteer Jam II\n**September 12, 1975**
\nOfficially known as \"Volunteer Jam '75,\" the second Jam was held at the [Murphy Center](https://bliptext.com/articles/murphy-center) in [Murfreesboro, Tennessee](https://bliptext.com/articles/murfreesboro-tennessee).\nSpecial guests included The Marshall Tucker Band, Dickey Betts and [Chuck Leavell](https://bliptext.com/articles/chuck-leavell) from the Allman Brothers Band, [Jimmy Hall](https://bliptext.com/articles/jimmy-hall) from [Wet Willie](https://bliptext.com/articles/wet-willie) and Dru Lombar from [Grinderswitch](https://bliptext.com/articles/grinderswitch).\nThe concert was filmed and released as Volunteer Jam - Starring The Charlie Daniels Band, the first full-length Southern rock motion picture.\n\n## Volunteer Jam III\n**January 8, 1977**
\nVolunteer Jam III was held at [Municipal Auditorium](https://bliptext.com/articles/nashville-municipal-auditorium) in Nashville.\nSpecial guests included [The Winters Brothers Band](https://bliptext.com/articles/the-winters-brothers-band), Grinderswitch, Wet Willie, [Sea Level](https://bliptext.com/articles/sea-level-band), [The Sanford-Townsend Band](https://bliptext.com/articles/the-sanford-townsend-band) and others.\nPerformances from this Jam were combined with performances from VolJam IV to create a live album, Volunteer Jam III and IV.\nAttendance was estimated to be 12,000 concert-goers.\n\n## Volunteer Jam IV\n**January 14, 1978**
\nVolunteer Jam IV was held again at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.\nSpecial guests included The Winters Brothers Band, Grinderswitch, Wet Willie, Sea Level, The Sanford-Townsend Band and others.\nPerformances from this Jam were combined with performances from VolJam III to create a live album, Volunteer Jam III and IV.\nAttendance was estimated to be 10,000 plus people.\nProceeds from the concert went to the surviving families of the [Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash](https://bliptext.com/articles/lynyrd-skynyrd-plane-crash) victims.\n\n## Volunteer Jam V\n**January 13, 1979**
\nVolunteer Jam V was held again at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.\nThis Jam marked the return of [Lynyrd Skynyrd](https://bliptext.com/articles/lynyrd-skynyrd) to the stage for the first time since the 1977 plane crash that claimed several band members, and the CDB gave the first live performance of a song that would catapult the band to superstardom later that year, \"[The Devil Went Down to Georgia](https://bliptext.com/articles/the-devil-went-down-to-georgia).\"\nSpecial guests also included Toy Caldwell and [George McCorkle](https://bliptext.com/articles/george-mccorkle) from the Marshall Tucker Band, [Dobie Gray](https://bliptext.com/articles/dobie-gray), The Winters Brothers Band, [The Henry Paul Band](https://bliptext.com/articles/henry-paul-musician), [Link Wray](https://bliptext.com/articles/link-wray), and [John Prine](https://bliptext.com/articles/john-prine).\n\n## Volunteer Jam VI\n**January 12, 1980**

\nVolunteer Jam XIII was held again at Starwood Amphitheatre in Nashville.\nSpecial guests included [William Lee Golden](https://bliptext.com/articles/william-lee-golden), Stevie Ray Vaughan, [Gary Chapman](https://bliptext.com/articles/gary-chapman-musician), [Great White](https://bliptext.com/articles/great-white) and others including Lynyrd Skynyrd.\nIt was [Johnny Van Zant](https://bliptext.com/articles/johnny-van-zant)'s first appearance as Skynyrd frontman, replacing his brother, [Ronnie](https://bliptext.com/articles/ronnie-van-zant), who died in a 1977 plane crash.\nThe Jam also coincided with the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, and some of the Jam performances were broadcast on the program.\n\n## Volunteer Jam XIV\n**May 4, 1991**
