Triệu

Triệu is a Chinese-Vietnamese surname, it is the Vietnamese translation of the Chinese surname Zhao (趙). It is the same as the Cantonese romanization "Chiu", the Taiwanese or Hong Kong romanization of "Chao" or the Korean romanization of "Cho" (조). The meaning of the surname is the same as in Chinese: "walk quickly", but the word "Triệu" also means "Million" in Vietnamese. The name is first in the Hundred Family Surnames – the traditional list of all Chinese surnames – because it was the emperor's surname of the Song dynasty (960–1279) when the list was compiled. It is commonly found in Vietnam among its Chinese community. Individuals with the surname, Triệu, likely migrated to Vietnam from the Guangdong and Fujian Provinces of China. Trieu is the anglicized variation of the surname Triệu.
