{"history":[],"article":{"id":"9c7bd96b-6a01-45ee-ba98-31f844eed3d4","title":"The Northern Way","slug":"the-northern-way","content":":::summary\n:::\n\n# \n**The Northern Way** was a collaboration initiated in February 2004 between the three northern [regional development agencies](https://bliptext.com/articles/regional-development-agency) (RDAs), [Northwest Development Agency](https://bliptext.com/articles/northwest-development-agency), [One NorthEast](https://bliptext.com/articles/one-northeast) and [Yorkshire Forward](https://bliptext.com/articles/yorkshire-forward) at the instigation of the then [Deputy Prime Minister](https://bliptext.com/articles/deputy-prime-minister) [John Prescott](https://bliptext.com/articles/john-prescott) to focus on issues important for the whole of the [North of England](https://bliptext.com/articles/north-of-england) with a dimension larger than could be tackled by one region alone — for example, transport infrastructure, or marketing the North internationally.\nThe body was tasked to address the £30 billion output gap between the North and the average for England as a whole.\nAlthough originally intended to have a twenty-year lifespan, the initiative's activity came to an end in March 2011, when its parent regional development agencies were wound up by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.\n# [Northern England coloured in blue | upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/North-South///divide///in///England.svg]\n\n# Themes\nTo lead the delivery of its objective, an independently chaired steering group was established whose members had a range of different [public](https://bliptext.com/articles/public-sector) and [private sector](https://bliptext.com/articles/private-sector) interests.\nThe Steering Group launched Moving Forward: The Northern Way Growth Strategy in September 2004, which focused on four themes:\n
