the northernmost 26 [counties](https://bliptext.com/articles/list-of-texas-counties) in the state.\nThe [panhandle](https://bliptext.com/articles/salient-geography) is a square-shaped area bordered by [New Mexico](https://bliptext.com/articles/new-mexico) to the west and [Oklahoma](https://bliptext.com/articles/oklahoma) to the north and east.\nIt is adjacent to the [Oklahoma Panhandle](https://bliptext.com/articles/oklahoma-panhandle), land which Texas previously claimed.\nThe 1820 [Missouri Compromise](https://bliptext.com/articles/missouri-compromise) declared no [slavery](https://bliptext.com/articles/slavery-in-the-united-states) would be allowed in states admitted from the [Louisiana Purchase](https://bliptext.com/articles/louisiana-purchase) above [36°30′ north latitude](https://bliptext.com/articles/parallel-36-30-north).\nTexas was annexed in 1845 from still more westerly land.\nThe [Compromise of Panhandle is slightly larger in size than the US [state of West Virginia](https://bliptext.com/articles/state-of-west-virginia).\nAn additional 162.53 km2 is covered by water.\nIts population as of the [2010 census](https://bliptext.com/articles/united-states-census-2010) was 427,927 residents, or 1.7% of the state's total population.\nAs of the 2010 census, the population density for the region
