{"history":[],"article":{"id":"18b78779-e29c-4d42-a7c6-921601777a04","title":"Numidotherium","slug":"numidotherium","content":":::summary\n![Numidotherium](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/Numidotherium///koholense///skull.png)\n**Image Caption:** Drawing of skull from Numidotherium with restored silhouette. \n**Genus:** Numidotherium \n**Parent Authority:** Jaeger, 1986 \n**Species:** koholense \n**Authority:** Jaeger, 1986 \n:::\n\n# \n**Numidotherium** (\"Numidia beast\") is an extinct genus of early [proboscideans](https://bliptext.com/articles/proboscidean), discovered in 1984, that lived during the middle [Eocene](https://bliptext.com/articles/eocene) of [North Africa](https://bliptext.com/articles/north-africa) some 46 million years ago.\nIt was about 90-100 cm tall at the shoulder and weighed about 250-300 kg.\nThe type species, N. koholense, is known from an almost complete skeleton from the site of El Kohol, southern [Algeria](https://bliptext.com/articles/algeria), dating from the early/middle Eocene period.\nThe animal had the size and the appearance of a modern [tapir](https://bliptext.com/articles/tapir).\nIn appearance, it was more slender and more plantigrade than an [elephant](https://bliptext.com/articles/elephant), its closest modern relative.
