Lespignan is a commune in the Hérault département in the Occitanie region in southern France.

Climate

Lespignan has a mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa). The average annual temperature in Lespignan is 15.3 C. The average annual rainfall is 620.7 mm with October as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in July, at around 23.8 C, and lowest in January, at around 8.0 C. The highest temperature ever recorded in Lespignan was 40.1 C on 12 August 2003; the coldest temperature ever recorded was -9.0 C on 22 November 1998.

History

Excavations indicate human habitation of Lespignan dating to 4000 years ago. During the 13th century, Lespignan was granted to Lambert de Thury, a companion of Simon de Montfort, as a part of the Albigensian Crusade. In 1379 King Charles V used his right of preemption to officially establish Lespignan as a community. In 1500, the village acquired its own lord through a treaty of joint sovereignty with King Charles V. The absence of a male heir led to successive changes in leadership.
