Šlapanice is located about 4 km east of Brno. It lies in the Dyje–Svratka Valley. The Říčka stream flows through the town.

The main landmark of Šlapanice is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was originally a medieval Gothic church, rebuilt in the Baroque style in the mid-18th century.
