Greendale, Chilliwack

Greendale is a primarily agricultural settlement within Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada, located 92 km east of the City of Vancouver.

<section begin=Place />Greendale is located on the west side of [Chilliwack](https://bliptext.com/articles/chilliwack), bordering the east side of the [City of Abbotsford](https://bliptext.com/articles/abbotsford-british-columbia). The [Vedder River](https://bliptext.com/articles/vedder-river) forms the border between Greendale and [Yarrow](https://bliptext.com/articles/yarrow-british-columbia) which lies to the South. Greendale was originally called Sumas, but got renamed in 1951 to avoid confusion with the adjoining municipality, the [District of Sumas](https://bliptext.com/articles/sumas-british-columbia) (now part of the [City of Abbotsford](https://bliptext.com/articles/abbotsford-british-columbia)), as well as [Sumas, Washington](https://bliptext.com/articles/sumas-washington). The area was once a 10000 acre [lake](https://bliptext.com/articles/lake) at the base of [Sumas Mountain](https://bliptext.com/articles/sumas-mountain-british-columbia). [Sumas Lake](https://bliptext.com/articles/sumas-lake) was drained in the early 1920s. Greendale has experienced two major [floods](https://bliptext.com/articles/flood), after the completed drainage, in 1894 and 1948.
