Cork City was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas from 1977 to 1981. The constituency elected 5 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) to the Dáil, on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV).

History and boundaries

The constituency was created under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974. It was only used for the 1977 general election and a by-election in 1979. The constituency was defined as the county borough of Cork, except the part which was in the Cork Mid constituency. The wards in Cork Mid were Bishopstown E, Gillabbey B, Gillabbey C, Glasheen A, Glasheen B, Glasheen C, Pouladuff A, Pouladuff B, The Lough, Togher A, Togher B. It was abolished under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1980 and replaced at the 1981 general election by Cork North-Central and Cork South-Central.

1979 by-election

Following the death of Labour Party TD Patrick Kerrigan, a by-election was held on 7 November 1979. The seat was won by the Fine Gael candidate Liam Burke.
