Byun Byung-joo ( or ; born 26 April 1961) is a former South Korean football player.

International career

Byun played for the South Korea national football team in 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cup, but South Korea failed to win a victory in the two World Cups. He said he was being inconvenienced by hitting Bulgaria's goalpost with his shot, which could have earned South Korea's first-ever World Cup victory if successful. Byun scored South Korea's second goal, helping his team defeat Saudi Arabia 2–0 in the 1986 Asian Games final. Byun scored with a Panenka against Antonín Panenka's country Czechoslovakia in a penalty shoot-out of the 1988 Korea Cup semi-finals.

Style of play

Nicknamed the "Bullet" in South Korea, Byun showed fast dribbles and accurate crosses. He was an important winger for South Korea at the time, although he was criticized for his monotonous pattern.
