Brookfield, New York
Brookfield is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 2,247 at the 2020 census. The Town of Brookfield is located in the southeastern part of the county. The county agricultural fair is held here every year.
History
The town was first settled circa 1791. The Town of Brookfield was established in 1795 from part of the town of Paris, but part was removed in 1805 to form the Town of Columbus, all this taking place while it was still part of Chenango County.
Geography
The northern town line is the border of Oneida County, and the southern town boundary is the border of Chenango County. The eastern town line is the border of Otsego County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 78.0 sqmi, of which 77.9 sqmi is land and 0.1 sqmi (0.13%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,403 people, 877 households, and 658 families residing in the town. The population density was 30.8 PD/sqmi. There were 1,041 housing units at an average density of 13.4 /sqmi. The racial makeup of the town was 98.29% White, 0.54% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.04% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population. There were 877 households, out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.13. In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $31,000 and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $26,462 versus $19,226 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,719. About 10.4% of families and 13.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.4% of those under age 18 and 5.5% of those age 65 or over.
