{"history":[],"article":{"id":"ba3ac140-8717-41ba-93bd-07f227a32ff2","title":"Black United Front","slug":"black-united-front","content":":::summary\n:::\n\n# \n**Black United Front**, also known as The **Black United Front** of Nova Scotia or simply **BUF**, was a [Black nationalist](https://bliptext.com/articles/black-nationalism) organization primarily based in [Halifax, Nova Scotia](https://bliptext.com/articles/halifax-regional-municipality), during the [Civil Rights Movement](https://bliptext.com/articles/civil-rights-movement) in the United States.\nPreceded by the [Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People](https://bliptext.com/articles/nova-scotia-association-for-the-advancement-of-coloured-people) (NSAACP), the BUF organization was founded by [William Pearly Oliver](https://bliptext.com/articles/william-pearly-oliver) and [Burnley \"Rocky\" Jones](https://bliptext.com/articles/burnley-rocky-jones) among others.\nIt was founded in 1965 and loosely based on the 10 point program of the [Black Panther Party](https://bliptext.com/articles/black-panther-party).\nIn 1968, [Stokely Carmichael](https://bliptext.com/articles/stokely-carmichael), popular for coining the phrase Black Power!, visited [Nova Scotia](https://bliptext.com/articles/nova-scotia) helping organize the BUF.\nThe organization remained in operation until 1996.\nThe Black United Front did a lot to benefit the [Black Nova Scotian](https://bliptext.com/articles/black-nova-scotians) community.\nThe organization held\ndiscussions about employment, housing and educational opportunities.\nThe group also formed its own [community police force](https://bliptext.com/articles/community-policing) to keep hard drugs out of Halifax communities, prevent [police brutality](https://bliptext.com/articles/police-brutality) in communities of colour, and built a park for young children called the Tot-Lot.\nAdditionally, they provided [legal aid](https://bliptext.com/articles/legal-aid) in the forms of free legal advice and discounted, even sometimes free legal service to the [Black community](https://bliptext.com/articles/black-canadians).\nThe Black United Front reportedly \"Shook up whites in Canada\".\n\n# Notable members\n\n# The Ten Point Program\nThe Ten Point Program was as follows:\n

We want freedom.\nWe want to be able to control the destiny of Black and oppressed communities.\n

We want full employment for our people.\n

We want an end to the robbery by the capitalists, of our black and oppressed communities.\n

We want decent housing, fit for the shelter of human beings.\n

We want decent education for **all** people and an education that teaches us our true history and role in present society.\n

We want our community to be healthy and for them use to their advantage, the free health care in this nation.\n

We want an immediate end to police brutality and murder of Black people, other people of color, and all oppressed people in this nation.\n

We want an immediate end to all wars.\n

We want adequate rights for all Black and oppressed people held in federal, provincial, county, municipal prisons and jails.\n

We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace.\n
