Berkovići
Berkovići (Берковићи) is a village and municipality in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As of 2013, it has a population of 2,114 inhabitants.
Geography
The municipality is located in the westernmost part of East Herzegovina.
History
The old town of Koštun near Berkovići from the early Middle Ages, built of very large stones, was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004. Medieval artifacts include numerous stećak monuments, some of exceptional historical value. The site of Potkuk stećak necropolis in Bitunja is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The municipality was created in 1995, after the Bosnian War, out of the Republika Srpska-controlled parts of the pre-war municipality of Stolac (now in the Federation of B&H). The village was struck by a big earthquake on April 22, 2022 with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
