{"history":[],"article":{"id":"a066cdab-0139-4260-8838-f441731b94b0","title":"2009–10 UEFA Europa League knockout phase","slug":"2009-10-uefa-europa-league-knockout-phase","content":":::summary\n:::\n\n# \nThe **knockout phase of the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League** began on 18 February, and concluded with the [final](https://bliptext.com/articles/2010-uefa-europa-league-final) at the [Volksparkstadion](https://bliptext.com/articles/volksparkstadion) in [Hamburg](https://bliptext.com/articles/hamburg), [Germany](https://bliptext.com/articles/germany) on 12 May 2010.\nThe knockout phase involved the 24 teams that finished in the top two in each group in the [group stage](https://bliptext.com/articles/2009-10-uefa-europa-league-group-stage) and the eight teams that finished in third place in the UEFA Champions League [group stage](https://bliptext.com/articles/2009-10-uefa-europa-league-group-stage).\nAll times are [CET](https://bliptext.com/articles/central-european-time)/[CEST](https://bliptext.com/articles/central-european-summer-time).\n\n# Format\nEach tie in the knockout phase, apart from the final, was played over two legs, with each team playing one leg at home.\nThe team that had the higher aggregate score over the two legs progressed to the next round.\nIn the event that aggregate scores finished level, the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs progressed.\nIf away goals were also equal, 30 minutes of [extra time](https://bliptext.com/articles/extra-time) were played.\nIf goals were scored during extra time and the aggregate score was still level, the visiting team qualified by virtue of more away goals scored.\nIf no goals were scored during extra time, there would be a [penalty shootout](https://bliptext.com/articles/penalty-shootout-association-football) after extra time.\nIn the final, the tie was played over just one leg at a neutral venue.\nIf scores were level at the end of normal time in the final, extra time would be played, followed by penalties if scores remained tied.\n
