The 1962 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 13th season in the National Football League, their 17th overall, and their 3rd season under head coach Red Hickey. This was the first season that the famous "S.F." oval logo appeared on the helmets. The 49ers attempted to improve on their 7–6–1 record from the previous season, and make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Their offseason was notable, as they drafted Lance Alworth with their first round draft pick; however, he opted to go to the San Diego Chargers of the rival American Football League instead. The 49ers went 6–8 that season, finishing in 5th place in the NFL Western Conference, and failing to make the playoffs for the 5th straight year.
