On June 2, 1949, the Phillies matched a Major League record with five home runs in one inning in a 12–3 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Shibe Park. On August 19, 1949, the Phillies held "Eddie Waitkus Night" at Shibe Park. Waitkus was in uniform for the first time since being shot on June 14, 1949, in Chicago by an infatuated woman. This marked the Phillies' first winning season since 1932, ending an MLB record of 16 consecutive losing seasons. This would remain the longest streak in league history until the Pirates suffered their 17th consecutive losing season in 2009.
